Head Instructor

Position Description:

The Head Instructor at Vertical World Seattle is responsible for instructor training, instructor coordination, and the daily operation of all Vertical World classes. Additionally, the Head Instructor will be responsible for ensuring the instructional team maintains high safety standards and provides excellent customer service. The Head Instructor position is a full-time, benefits-eligible position and reports to the Regional Director of Instruction, as well as the Facility Manager.

Responsibilities:

• Develop, implement, and evaluate instructional curriculums

• Process all instructional inquiries

• Manage class rosters, waitlists, and instructor availability

• Contribute to staff development, assessment, and disciplinary action with input from management

• Provide instruction during staff development/ trainings

• Lead and effectively teach and mentor staff on a daily basis

• Work a flexible and sometimes demanding schedule including nights, weekends, and holidays

Required Skills / Knowledge:

• Exhibit a strong work ethic and positive attitude

• Excellent communication, organization, and customer service skills

• Climbing specific teaching and/or coaching experience

• Familiarity with Climbing Wall or similar recreational industry standards

• Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certifications (willing to obtain)

Desired Skills / Knowledge:

• AMGA CWI or SPI Certification

• WFA/WFR Certification

• Experience with RockGymPro or other Point of Sale platforms

Lead Camp Instructor Job Description:

  • Work with kids from 3-18 (may vary weekly), for all or most of the 11-week camp season
  • Teach skills ranging from bouldering to lead climbing
  • Design and implement weekly camp activities, including technical lessons, climbing challenges, and games
  • Drive 15-passenger vans to and from climbing sites (must be 24 years or older to drive)
  • Lead outdoor climbing days for older groups, including but not limited to: gear packing and inventory, putting up and cleaning routes, and top rope site management

Lead Camp Instructor Qualifications:

  • 18+ years old
  • 2+ years’ experience working with kids
  • Experience teaching climbing
  • CPR and First Aid training (by the time camps start)
  • Personal outdoor sport climbing experience
  • Valid driver’s license (if 24+)
  • Able to pass a background check

Lead Camp Instructor Preferred Qualifications:

  • AMGA SPI or CWI certification
  • Extensive personal outdoor sport climbing experience
  • WFA/WFR certification

Vertical World is looking for enthusiastic and experienced fitness instructors to teach group classes, conduct private instruction, and be available for class substitution. Classes will be at our Magnolia/Seattle location, and will include strength and conditioning, general conditioning, mobility, core durability, sport specific, and specialty classes. Part-time with the potential for full time with the addition of personal training hours. Part time availability will be from 2-10 hours of classes.

Prerequisites:

● Must hold a current personal trainer certificate or group fitness certificate with any of the major nationally accreditation organizations (NASM, ACE, ACSM, NSCA, etc.) or equivalent

● Must be First Aid and CPR certified

● Minimum of 6 months experience instructing group fitness classes and private clients

● An interest in training clients for outdoor sports is a preferred but not required

● Experience with rock climbing is desired but not required

Compensation:

● Hourly compensation for all classes instructed

● Vertical World gym membership for permanent instructors

General Duties:

● Plan and instruct challenging, creative, and safe group exercise classes of various sizes

● Emphasize movement quality and cue correct form throughout the class

● Scale movements and intensity for a variety of abilities and fitness levels when appropriate

● Engage participants in an approachable and well-informed manner

● Be available for personal training clients and develop progressive fitness plans to meet their goals

● Attend trainer meetings and report on class performance

● Coordinate with other fitness instructors for class coverage if necessary

● Arrive 10 min before scheduled class time to prepare the room, equipment, and welcome members

Class Schedule:

Classes are held seven days a week. Classes and times vary throughout the year to reflect seasonal needs. Morning and evening classes are held most days of the week with the exception of Thursday evenings, which are reserved for Vertical World sponsored events and clinics. Classes are held Saturday and Sunday mornings.
