VERTICAL WORLD YOGA COORDINATOR

The Yoga Coordinator (YC) supports the yoga program at the Vertical World Climbing Gym (VW) in Seattle. This role coordinates weekly yoga classes, works with instructors to ensure coverage, and teaches classes. The YC is committed to contributing to a professional, safe, and inclusive environment where individuals can practice yoga through group classes. A successful YC is flexible, reliable, professional, and a positive team player who thrives in an active work environment. They are also a self-starter who is willing to take on new projects with a company’s goals and best interest in mind.

Location: Vertical World Seattle

Hours: 12-20 hours weekly

Reports to: Gym Manager

Compensation: DOE, between $22 – $25 hourly; $45 per class taught

Work Location: 100% In-person

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

Class Schedule & Maintenance

  • In partnership with the Gym Manager, develop a yoga class schedule that meets the needs of the VW community.
  • Maintain the calendar of yoga classes in Rock Gym Pro (RGP).
  • Make recommendations to the Gym Manager regarding programming, maintaining the health of the program, and ways to improve the program informed by RGP data and member feedback.
  • Ensure that the yoga room and equipment remain clean and functional.
  • As needed, submit yoga equipment request to the Gym Manager to ensure that all equipment is in good working order.
  • Communicate with the Gym Manager and Front Desk if a class needs to be canceled. To maintain consistency for members, VW strives to have all classes taught with infrequent cancelations.
  • Attended staff meetings and 1:1’s with supervisor.

Instructor Coordination

  • Keep the instructor schedule up to date in When I Work.
  • Regularly communicate with instructors to ensure class coverage.
  • Build and maintain an adequate sub list and work with the Gym Manager to develop a process to backfill necessary classes.
  • Communicate yoga programming, gym updates, and additional non-HR relevant information to instructors as needed.
  • Every six months shadow yoga classes and offer safety related feedback per VW guidelines.
  • Participate in the interview process of yoga instructor applicants, specifically yoga auditions, and provide feedback to the Gym Manager.
  • Support instructors in learning pre/post class duties by ensuring that instructors have received current documentation of: (1) expectations regarding attendance and timeliness when teaching; (2) class coverage and subbing policy; and (3) yoga room cleanliness protocol. Answer instructor’s questions as needed and defer to the Gym Manger for HR related questions.
  • Participate in the on-boarding of new yoga instructors and subs per the Gym Manager.
  • This role does not manage staff.

Teaching

  • Follow VW policies, procedures, safety requirements, and enforce all yoga related gym policies.
  • Provide a consistent and safe space for all to practice.
  • This role teaches multiple weekly classes to support the class schedule.

Other responsibilities may be required as needed.

Requirements:

Individual & Interpersonal Skills

Experience

  • Yoga Minimum: 2-3 years regularly (e.g., 2-3 classes weekly) teaching in-person group yoga classes at a gym or studio.
  • Coordination Minimum: 1-2 years coordinating schedules for in-person group yoga or fitness classes at a gym or studio.
  • Experience with customer service.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Part of the VW community is preferred.

Teaching

  • Must be able to step in to teach any class on the schedule with little to no notice (e.g., teacher no-show, teacher is sick, no sub is found) while scheduled in the gym.
  • Awareness of proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
  • Offer verbal alignment and modification cues during a class. VW does not offer physical (hands-on) adjustments and/or modifications at our gym.
  • Ability to lead adults in yoga classes.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.

Technical

  • Experience with RGP.
  • Experience with When I Work is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel.

Working Conditions

  • Must be flexible with schedule availability within the hourly commitment based on business needs, including possible evenings and weekends.
  • Must be able to move around the gym, crouch, bend, reach, and lift up to 25 pounds.
  • This position requires the coordinator to be physically present in the gym.
  • Seattle, WA 98199: Reliably commute to or planning to relocate before starting work.

Education:

  • Certificate of Completion of a 200-hour yoga teacher training with a Registered Yoga School (RYS) confirmed by Yoga Alliance.

YOGA INSTRUCTOR SUBSTITUTE

Hours: Part time per class, flexibility required

Compensation: $40 per class with students, $20 per class without students

Responsibilities:

  • Be punctual; early is on time. Please arrive 5-10 mins early to clock in and set up your space
  • Take accurate notes of each class
  • Plan classes for a balance of safety, technical skill, and a wide range of abilities
  • Demonstrate the poses/techniques/modifications, etc.
  • Keeping to the “style” of the class expected by the students
  • Curate music for each class that fits the pace and vibe of the class (keeping words to a minimum)
  • Help to keep the yoga space neat and orderly e.g., wipe down props/return to their designated space
  • Dry mop before each class

YOUTH PROGRAM INSTRUCTOR LEVEL 1

Vertical World has a longstanding legacy of producing the highest quality youth programs in the Region and has the reputation of being an industry leader in the category Nationwide. Youth Program (YP) Instructors teach rock climbing classes and camps to a wide range of youth climbers enrolled in our programs. The ages range from 2 – 19.  YP instructors will teach classes throughout multiple seasons within the program department; School year programs, Day Camps, Summer Camps, and more. Duties may also include group offerings like Birthday Parties and groups. It is the duty of the YP Instructor to deliver the highest level of climbing instruction and professionalism to all youth climbers. YP Instructors uphold the exceptional legacy of the Vertical World youth climbing community. 

Location: Vertical World Seattle 

Hours: 2 or less hrs per week (Part Time) 

Reports to: Youth Program Coordinator 

Compensation: $20 hourly
